Zille: We should be proud

Johannesburg - South Africans should be proud of the progress made in overcoming the legacy of apartheid, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille said on Tuesday.

In a freshwater pearl earrings statement released before reconciliation day on Wednesday, Zille said the day symbolised the advances the country had made towards ending discrimination.

"Our Day of Reconciliation reminds us how far we have come as a nation," said Zille.

"We celebrate these efforts and renew our commitments to achieving a united, safe, prosperous and free society in wish pearl gift set which all South Africans have the opportunity to achieve their dreams."

Zille said Helen Suzman's death at the beginning of the year reminded the country of the responsibilities vested in all to help to continue to build a society free from all forms of discrimination and power abuse.

Suzman, an anti-apartheid activist, was the sole representative in Parliament of the liberal Progressive Party, forerunner of the Democratic Alliance, from 1961 to 1974.

"We must continue to foster tolerance and wholesale coral jewelry compassion," Zille said.

Hostage drama: Praise for cops

Johannesburg - National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele commended the specially trained policemen who killed two hostage takers in Petrusburg in the Free State on Tuesday morning.

"The National Commissioner of the cultured pearl jewelry South African Police Service, Commissioner Bheki Cele has commended the Special Task Force for a swift response in a highly orchestrated hostage drama on the Abrahamskraal Road at Bainsvlei in the Free State Province...." his statement read.

Sixty-year-old Flip Kotze was attacked and tied to a pole on his farm Uitvlug and robbed of his firearms and a cellphone on Monday morning.

The attackers fled in his bakkie, but with a broken arm and injuries to his head, Kotze managed to free himself and let neighbouring farmers know.

They jumped to his rescue and freshwater pearl jewelry two neighbouring farmers spotted the robbers but were then taken hostage.

One managed to get out of the bakkie and ran to a police station but the other, 50-year-old Gerhard Venter, was held captive, with threats to kill him if the police did not back off.

Bloemfontein police cordoned off the road and 20 hours of negotiations to free him began.

The police's Special Task Force was called in and they shot the robbers dead on Tuesday morning.

"For any eventuality on land, sea and air, our Special Task Force responds decisively and accordingly for the benefit of  freshwater pearl jewelry fellow South Africans.

"However this is indeed a clear message that criminals must retreat, police are equal to the task and are determined to squeeze the space for criminals to zero," Cele said.

Snipers end hostage drama

Cape Town -  SAPS task force snipers have killed two men who had been holding a farmer hostage near Bloemfontein since Monday afternoon.

According to ER24, the wish pearl gift set hostage sustained only minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The negotiations have been ongoing since Monday afternoon and went on throughout the night. According to ER24 the negotiations ceased at approximately 05:00 on Tuesday morning but resumed again after 06:00.

The drama started on Monday morning when the men attacked a farm in the Petrusburg area. The farmer whose farm freshwater pearl pendant was under attack reportedly called his neighbours for assistance. The neighbours responded and a man and his nephew who were en route to assist were hijacked by the attackers.

A chase ensued on the Abrahamskraal road from Petrusburg toward Bloemfontein. The nephew managed to escape from the hijacked vehicle and ran to the Bainsvlei police station to get help.

A hostage situation ensued with the remaining occupant of the hijacked vehicle from about 14:00 and continued through the freshwater pearl pendant night. ER24 said the police task force arrived on the scene at 17:00.

Police negotiators tried to convince the men to freshwater perl jewelryhand themselves over, and Venter also spoke to the men and tried to resolve the situation without any loss of life.

"I kept trying to gain my captors' trust. By about 21:30 I finally managed to do so, and while we were chatting, I tried to convince them to hand themselves over."

At about 03:00 on Tuesday morning, the attackers agreed to put an end to the drama by daybreak. At 05:00, however, they changed their minds and once again demanded that the road be cleared.

"They wanted me to go to Bloemfontein with them, draw money, fill up the bakkie, and then they'd let me go."
By about 06:00 it became clear that the men were not going to surrender.

"The police negotiators and akoya pearl beads I kept trying to talk them into surrendering, but it didn't work."

Shots fired

Venter said when one of the men climbed out of the vehicle shortly after 07:00 to urinate, two shots were fired almost simultaneously, killing the two hostage takers. At that stage, Venter was sitting on the middle seat, and the men died on either side of him.

"I'm extremely grateful, not for the loss of life, but that the police were eventually able to end the situation. It could have ended very differently," he said.

"I would do it again tomorrow, because I know my neighbours would do the same for me. We farmers have to stand together at times like this."

'They wanted to shoot me'

Bloemfontein - "They were extremely nervous and just wanted to shoot me," said Gerhard Venter of the two men who held him hostage for about 20 hours.

The men were shot dead by police snipers on akoya pearl necklace  Tuesday morning.
 
Venter was taken hostage at about 10:00 on Monday morning after going to the aid of another farmer who'd been attacked. He attributes the fact that he's still alive to his ability to stay calm.

"If they saw something looking even a little out of place, they'd say they're going to shoot me. If there was a bakkie driving too close to us, they wanted to shoot me."

Several of the farmers in the inflatable tent Petrusburg area had heard of his kidnapping and followed his bakkie. Venter said he had to make several phone calls to convince them to stay far away from them.

At ease

"I obeyed every one of their orders and tried to stay calm, since I realised that would be the only way I would make it out of the situation alive."

Venter said he chatted to his captors and at one stage came very close to convincing them to hand themselves over to  freshwater pearl strand  the police. He said the presence of the police's special task force put him at ease, since he realised they were trained specifically for situations like these.
